Laparoscopic Surgery VS Traditional Open Surgery.

Laparoscopic surgery also known as Keyhole surgery is minimally invasive surgery that comes with several advantages over traditional open surgery.

For surgery or examination, traditional surgery may require one large abdominal incision whereas in laparoscopic surgery only a small incision may be up to 1,5 cm in length in made in the abdomen. In order to expand the abdominal walls, the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide. This helps the laparoscopic surgeon a clear exposure of the organ and provides extra room to work. A laparoscope is inserted through an incision and used to examine the organs and tissues inside the abdomen. Once a surgeon completes the surgery the carbon dioxide is expelled from the abdomen. With the help of stitches, the incision is closed.

Some of the advantages of Laparoscopic surgery over open surgery are

1-Since as compared to tradition surgery the size of the incision is very small in Laparoscopic surgery, this helps in less blood loss.

2-Because of smaller incision reduces the risk of pain and bleeding after the surgery… In tradition surgery, a large incision is made and because of this patient usually, need to take pain killers for a longer time. In laparoscopic surgery, the healing process is much faster because of a small incision and is less painful.

3- Scar size in laparoscopic surgery is small because of small incision size as compared to tradition surgery where the surgical wound is large and the scar size is also larger.

4- Postoperative infection is less in laparoscopic surgery because the exposer of an internal organ to external contaminants is significantly less.

5- The stay in the hospital is shorter with laparoscopic surgery because the healing is faster. Most patients get discharged on the same day of laparoscopic surgery  and can return to their normal everyday lives much more quickly than after an open surgery procedure
